Drug godfather Babul Member arrested in Cox’s Bazar

Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has arrested Jaforul Islam alias Babul Member (42), the top dealer of the drug syndicate who smuggled Yaba into the country from Myanmar.
A team of RAB-15 arrested him in a raid in Katakhali area of Teknaf, Cox’s Bazar on the basis of secret information on Wednesday (October 5) night.
According to RAB, Babul Member is the top drug dealer in Teknaf area. He used to smuggle drugs, weapons and gold into the country from Myanmar. With Babul’s intervention, about 40-45 lakh Yaba were brought to the country every month. Babul has his own armed gang for drug smuggling. The number of members of this circle is 20-25 people. Babul was doing this drug business under the cover of shrimp business.
RAB Legal and Media Wing Director Commander Khandaker Al Moin gave this information at a press conference organized at RAB Media Center in Karwan Bazar in the capital on Thursday (October 5).
He said, that last night a team of RAB-15 raided Katakhali area of Teknaf and arrested top terrorist Zaforul Islam alias Babul Member (42) of Cox’s Bazar drug and arms dealer. During his arrest, 55,000 pieces of Yaba, a foreign Arms, a domestic firearm and ammunition were seized.
Babul member is one of the top drug dealers and top terrorists of Teknaf area of Cox’s Bazar. He is identified as the godfather of drug smuggling in the local area. He used to bring drugs into the country from neighboring countries. Babul formed a gang of 20-25 people in the area to carry out various terrorist activities including drug dealing. He was involved in extortion, gold smuggling, illegal weapons, illegal sand mining, illegal cattle smuggling and illegal hill cutting and other terrorist activities in the area.
Based on the interrogation of the arrested Babul, Khandaker Al Moin said that after 2005, Babul was involved in drug and other smuggling in Teknaf area. He used to bring drugs from neighboring countries and deliver them to different areas of the country. In 2017, he met Nabi Hosain, a top Rohingya terrorist listed as a fugitive in the Rohingya camp, through Lutfur Rahman, another drug dealer in the area. After meeting Nabi, Babul got involved with a bigger drug syndicate.
Babul member was involved in drug smuggling business under the cover of shrimp business. A group of 20-25 people used to bring these drugs from the neighboring countries to the country. Babul used to bring four-five consignments of yaba every week to the country and hide them in his shrimp farm in Balukhali area. About 200,000 pieces of yaba were brought to the country in each shipment. Babul used to sell Yaba for 3-4 lakh taka per consignment bought for 1.5 lakh taka.
Arrested Babul member took admission in chemistry in a university in Chittagong in 2001 and stopped it after studying for one year. Later, in 2003, he passed his BA from a local college. He was accused of murdering a man named Jabu in Palongkhali area in 2005 and is hiding in different places including Chattagram. A drug case was registered against him in Teknaf police station in 2008.
Commander Moin said that in 2017, Babul was released on bail after serving almost two months in Jabu murder case. With the money he earned through drug trade and smuggling, he built a huge wealth of about 50 crore taka, including luxury flats, dump trucks, trucks, land in the area and fish projects in Cox’s Bazar.
Cox’s Bazar’s Ukhia police station has more than nine cases against him for various crimes including murder and drugs. Babul used to come to Yaba country to take 40-45 lakh pieces every month. He earned about 2 crore taka per month
